French Onion Dip

Great as a quick weekend pantry clean out or for parties, this creamy herbaceous dip pairs great with fresh kettle chips!

Ingredients

  • 2T salted butter
  • 1T beef tallow or equivalent
  • 1/2T Kosher Salt
  • Black Pepper, ground, to taste
  • 1 Lg Yellow Onion, minced
  • 1 Md Shallot, minced
  • 5 dashes of Worcestershire Sauce
  • 3T Water
  • 2T Minced Dried Onion
  • 1/2T Onion Powder
  • 1t MSG
  • 16oz Sour Cream
  • 1 Block Cream Cheese, softened
  • 8oz Mayonnaise
  • 1 bunch Italian Parsley
  • Chives, sliced for garnish

Steps

  1. In a nonstick pan over medium heat, melt the butter and tallow.
  2. Add the onion and salt to the pan. Saute the minced onion until translucent, stirring often.
  3. Add the minced shallot to the pan and cook for 2-3 minutes. Enough to remove the sharp flavor and allow for carmelization.
  4. Add Worcestershire sauce and water to pan and deglaze.
  5. Add minced dried onion, onion powder, and MSG. Remove from heat.
  6. Using a large bowl or stand mixer, whisk together the sour cream, cream cheese, and mayonnaise until thoroughly combined. (Use a silicone spatula to regularly scrape down the sides of the bowl.)
  7. Combine cheese mix, minced herbs, and onions.
  8. Cling wrap and refrigerate overnight.
  9. To serve, place in an ornate glass bowl and top with sliced chives and parsley leaves, and enjoy with crunchy full flavored potato chips!
